Box for shoe shine kit
June 4: My little Kiwi shoe shine kit keeps growing. When I bought it, everything could fit in the little zippered bag it came in, but as I’ve bought more polish, a new brush and other shoe care accoutrements, I’ve had a hard time jamming it all back into that little bag. Rather than go out and buy a bigger bag, I really, weirdly like the idea of making something nice to hold my shoe polish. It doesn’t even have to be all that nice, honestly. It just has to hold shoe polish.
I don’t have the tools anymore to make fancy dovetailed joints or even good mitered corners, which probably has everything to do with why I never started this project. I had envisioned a precisely dovetailed box that I built in my workshop packed with precision tools and bright lights. I can’t do that - yet - but not having everything shouldn’t be a reason to do nothing.
I used a board that’s been sitting in my garage for a year. I bought it for something, but that something has been forgotten. The metal bits were bought at the home improvement store and I had the leather left over from a previous project. It’s what I can do with what I have, and it’s one of the ugliest things I’ve ever made.
Seriously, if I didn’t commit to posting something every day, I wouldn’t have posted this. This is a good eye-opener for this “thing a day” project, though. Some things can’t be done in a couple of hours after work. I’ll have to make version 2 on a Saturday, after I’ve done some research and thought about it a little more.
