Go get the axe (part 3)

IMG_1312 Before I sharpen the blade, I want to be able to protect the squishy, meat-based users of this blade from accidental cuts. Stubbing your toe on a dull axe hurts. Stubbing your toe on a sharp one will ruin your day.

There are plenty of leather sheaths available online, but I thought I’d make this one. I have some scrap leather laying around, and it doesn’t seem like a hard project.

I traced the blade with a pencil, then made evenly spaced dents in the leather with a fork. These served as guides for the rest of the sewing. In retrospect, I shouldn’t have cleaned up the leather like I did. They don’t look great, but they’ll work, I suppose.

At this point, I’m going to call this project complete. I had plans of adding more to this, such as a case and an engraving on the handle, but I think this is good enough. If it had turned out better, I might have gone that route. Maybe my restored, customized hammer or wrench set will get his treatment. I’m going back to my hometown this weekend, so hopefully I’ll have a chance to dig through the barn to see what else I find.
