Squashed Smurf Soap
This was an experiment to see if crayons could be used as an effective dye for soap. Since crayons are Stearic Acid, they can be saponified (and add a little bit of hardness to your mix.) I mixed up a 2 lb batch, divided into thirds, to use red, blue and plain soap.
The blue crayon was a success, but the red washed out as soon as the lye hit it. I completely screwed up the swirl, too. Had I not been filming, it would have been prettier, but I call it a successful experiment.
The recipe for each is as follows:
200 grams of Olive Oil 80 grams of Coconut Oil 27 grams of Castor Oil 43 grams of NaOH 130 grams of H2O 1 teaspoon sugar 1 teaspoon of salt (NaCl)
1 crayon, finely chopped
Mix the shredded crayon with a little bit of olive oil, then microwave it for 45 seconds or so until the crayon dissolves in the oil. Add this to your total olive oil weight. From there, add the rest of your oils & lye mixture. I like to hot process everything for a couple of hours at 200F deg. F. I think it makes better soap, but that’s subjective.
Thanks!
